Mr Oskar Leander Johansson Palmquist

Oscar Leander Johansson Palmquist, 26, was born 26 July 1885, the son of Knut Johansson and Mathilda Abrahamson. He came from Kvarnaryd, Villastad parish, near Smålands stenar, Småland, Sweden.

Oskar was, according to a British list, on his way from home to siblings on a farm in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but according to Gothenburg police he was on his way to New Haven, Conecticut, the latter address probably correct as he in a later letter given New Haven as his address.

He booked his ticket in the name Johansson and boarded the Titanic at Southampton as a third class passenger ; he was rescued in lifeboat 15.

Oscar L. Johansson had since an age of 13 years problems with his knee, according to some information the wounded knee came worse after the catastrophe. He wrote to the Swedish consulate in New York and asked for further support, because he had to take a loan before he could start to work and as he wrote on 29 August 1912 " I have started working, but I'm not got my full strength back and I'll never be what I was before" He noticed that he had lost everything in the accident and " I came nude to N.Y., Where I got some clothes and the things I needed most". The consulate however answered that he had got enough already and that he probably had been denied to stay in USA had he been examined the usual way. No further correspondence took place.

The Red Cross assistance committee gave him $200 in April 1912.

Oscar Leander Johansson lived the rest of his wife near his siblings in Bridgeport, Connecticut and worked as a tool maker. He never married but was murdered by the husband (or boyfriend) of the woman he was having an affair with. Contemporary reports at the time of his death which appeared in the New York Times and Bridgeport Post called the death an accident.)
