Mr Samuel Herman (known as "Sam"), 49, was born in the village of Galhampton near Castle Cary, Somerset in 1862. He was the son of George Herman (agricultural labourer) and Sarah Herman. He was brother to Mary Ann, Anna and Sarah. He had, for many years, been a butcher in Castle Cary and for some years the proprietor of the Britannia Hotel, in Fore Street, Castle Cary. The family had latterly resided at 'Smallways'.

He boarded the Titanic at Southampton as a second class passenger together with his wife Jane Herman (née Laver) whom he had married in Bristol in 1887 and their twin daughters, Alice and Kate. Their second class ticket 220845 cost £65. They were bound for Bernardsville, New Jersey where Jane had a brother. Travelling with the family was George Sweet, their adopted son.

Mr Herman died in the sinking. His body, if recovered, was never identified.

Notes
A sister-in-law lived at Packstone, Dairnsmouth(?), England.
