Mr Walter James Hawksford from Kingston, Surrey, was travelling to New York to become the first Export Sales Manager for Schweppes.
He boarded the Titanic at Southampton as a first class passenger, he occupied cabin D-45.
In a letter to his wife he mentions that after the collision people joked about it and said that the ship had just pushed an iceberg out of the way. He went on to describe his escape in the second last boat to leave. An interesting detail is that as the ship sank those in the boat removed their hats and were silent for several minutes.
Hawksford was rescued in lifeboat 3. He arrived in New York broke, but his firm sent him money and he was able to stay in the Hotel Astor.
Walter Hawksford died in London on 13 November 1922.
