Mr William Carbines

 

Mr William Carbines, 19, was born in 1893 at Nanjivey, Higher Stennack in St Ives, Cornwall, the son of Mr Nicholas W. Carbines (farm labourer, 1857-1938) and Mrs Jane Carbines (1864-1955). He was brother to Nicholas, John, Robert, Thomas, Elizabeth, Jane, Lily, Annie (who subsequently married William John Berriman) and George Bryant (who died 24 June 1912 and was interred close to his brother William at Barnoon, St Ives).

In his early years he was a member of the St Ives Town Band. William Carbines was a copper miner, as were his elder brothers. Two of his brothers (Robert and John) had previously moved to Calumet, Houghton County, Michigan where it was the intention that William was to join them there, another brother, Nicholas was also a miner in America.

Willie, as he was known, boarded the Titanic at Southampton as a second class passenger (ticket number 28424, £13) with his brother-in-law William John Berriman.

Willie died in the sinking, his body was recovered from the sea by the cable ship Mackay-Bennett (#18).

His 2 brothers identified him and on 10 May the body was taken aboard the Oceanic for transport to Southampton and then by train to St Ives on 27 May 1912 where a long concourse of people lined the terrace overlooking the railway. He was interred in his grandparents' (William and Anne Carbines) grave, in the Barnoon Cemetery, St Ives on 30 May 1912 where over 500 mourners paid their respects.

William's brothers were also able to identify Joseph C Nicholls from the possessions recovered from his body.
