Miss Katherine "Katie" Mullen

Miss Katherine "Katie" Mullen (1), 19, was born on 29 May 1890. She came from Esker, Co Longford and boarded the Titanic at Queenstown as a third class passenger (ticket number 35852, 7 14s 8d). Her destination was New York city.

Katherine shared cabin 161 on E-deck with Kate Gilnagh, Kate and Mary Murphy. On the night of the sinking she and her roommates were held back at a gate leading to the lifeboats. James Farrell persuaded the crew to let them through the gate. She was rescued in lifeboat 16.

Miss Mullen stayed in New York City following the sinking. She married Martin Kearns (2) and lived in Queens, New York for the rest of her life. She did not mind speaking of the Titanic until the death by drowning of her son during WW2. After that, Kate Kearns never wanted to discuss the Titanic disaster again.

She died 1 November 1970 in Woodside, Queens, New York.

Notes
1. She is sometimes listed as "Mullins or "Mullens".
2. Martin J. Kearns was born 5 April 1889 and died 28 September 1976.
