George Henry Chitty

Mr George Henry Chitty

George Henry Chitty was born in 1862 in Reigate, Surrey, the son of Thomas Chitty and Ellen Butler and one of seven children. His siblings being Jane Olive, Alice Mary, Ellen, James, Edward John, and Elizabeth.

George Married a lady called Julia and by 1901 they had three children, Jessie (born 1882), Archibald George (born 1884) and Eliza M. (born 1890).

In the 1901 census, George is living with his wife Julia and a relative who is listed as a boarder, Samuel John Chitty. George gives his occupation as baker. They were living at 66 Earls Road, Portswood, Southampton.

When he signed-on to the Titanic, on 4 April 1912, he gave his address as 69 Bevois Valley Road, Southampton. His last ship had been the Oceanic. As an assistant baker he received monthly wages of 4 10s.

Chitty was on board the Titanic with his son Archibald Chitty, who was a third class steward.

George Henry Chitty died in the sinking. His body, if recovered, was never identified.
