BELFAST TITANIC SOCIETY COMMEMORATES CENTENARY OF RMS OLYMPIC’S LAUNCH

The Belfast Titanic Society will mark 100 years since the launch of Titanic’s sister ship, RMS Olympic with a short ceremony on Wednesday October 20th at noon. Members will gather on the slipway where Olympic was constructed to hold a commemoration of this important date in Belfast’s history.

RMS Olympic LaunchSociety chairman, Una Reilly said, “The centenary of the launch of Olympic is a date which must be marked as we build up to the commemorations of Titanic’s centenary. Olympic was the successful sister of the three liners, with a career which lasted until the mid 1930’s. Her success is often forgotten because of what happened to her sister ship in 1912.”

The society is planning an international convention to mark Titanic’s launch centenary next May but in the meantime Una Reilly said, “Belfast is the only city in the world which can mark important dates like today. We have more than a year when we can commemorate key dates in the history of the Olympic class liners and therefore build up enthusiasm and excitement about 2012.

Press and photographers are invited to come along to the event. Members and some local schoolchildren will meet up between 11.30 and 11.45 at Titanic House, Queens Road, Belfast (the old drawing offices) and then walk onto the slipway where Olympic was built for a short ceremony.
