Emil Herbert Kiene was born in Manhattan, New York on 23 January 1874. He was the son of glass and bottle merchant William Kiene (1846-1923), a migrant from Württemberg, Germany, and Wilhelmine “Minna” Behring.

Later a bottle merchant in the employ of his father, Kiene was married in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint Presbyterian Church on 16 February 1904 to Edith Marion Walters (b. circa 1877); the couple remained childless and made their home in New York City.

A frequent traveller on business and pleasure, Kiene was a first cabin passenger aboard the Carpathia when that ship rescued the survivors of the Titanic disaster.

Emil Kiene died in New York on 30 December 1935.
