ONLY SURVIVOR in this district of the Titanic disaster, Mrs Delia LaSha, Grananoque, was the guest of the management of the Odeon theatre at a showing of the film "Titanic" Wednesday evening and later received floral tributes from civic dignitaries. She is pictured above, second from right, with Mayer J.D. Carmichael of Grananoque, left, M.I. Shore, the theatre manager, second from left and Mayor George Clark Wright of Kingston, light, presenting a sheet of roses to her.
Born in County Cork, Ireland, Mrs LaSha was an 18-year-old steerage passenger travelling alone, aboard the Titanic, bound for New York where she was to meet her brother.
When the great ship sank she jumped off and was picked up by a lifeboat, only to be shoved off it for lack of room. She was picked up again later, wearing only a house coat and slippers, her money tied in a bag around her neck.
She was on the open sea two days before she was rescued.
Taken to New York she was rushed to Bellevue Hospital where she was treated for several weeks.
A resident of New York State for 15 years, Mrs Lasha, now a widow, lives in Grananoque with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs Jack Higgins.
Not in strong health, she became so overlooked on seeing the film that it was with difficulty that she was persuaded to accept the floral tributes from the dignitaries.
