  • Hello Sam. It was only by clicking on your profile to make contact with you that I realised that you are from New Zealand - me too! Born in Christchurch and lived in both North and South Islands. Now living in England (as parents are British).

Anyway, the reason for contacting you is that I am writing a book about the life and legacy of Captain Smith and would like to see if it was possible, with your permission, to reference your excellent article “The Fearless Mrs. Givens -Purser accused of discrimination, overuled by Captain SmithThe Fearless Mrs. Givens

It is a fascinating little incident that also gives us some insight into Smith's character. While I only quote from The Colorado Statesman, August 20, 1910, it is your article that drew my attention to it, so I want to give proper credit where it is due, and wanted to contact you first before going any further.

Are you happy for me to credit you? Please let me know your thoughts.

    Many thanks,
    Dan

    Hi Dan,

More than happy Dan - I would be honoured! Thank you.

I'm originally from Northern Ireland but have lived in Auckland since 2011. I frequently visit Christchurch with work - a city I love.

If you make it back to these shores let me know so I can buy you a beer or two

    Kind regards,

    Sam

    Brilliant, many thanks Sam.

Would be great to see you when I am next in the country - I have clocked up a lot of flying hours recently as I have been returning up to twice in one month due to family. Christchuch is indeed a lovely city, but my memories are pre-earthquake when it was thriving. Seems a shadow of its former self now, sadly.

I'll try and keep you up-to-date with how the book is progressing. Thanks again for your help!
