A DIFFERENT OLYMPIC

Just a guess here.
While the diary is dated 1912, the accompanying photos don't seem to fit. Perhaps it wasn't at all uncommon to mistake HMS and RMS. I have a miniature Titanic labled as HMS.

But the gravity davits in the photos neither fit the ship nor the period. If I recall, they were introduced in the late '20's, early '30's. The woman's wardrobe doesn't seem very 1912, either.

I'd say the diary is referring to the Olympic we know, but the photos are of different ships and times. The auction doesn't directly claim these photos are Olympic, though it does seem to give the impression.

Lester,
In the past I've seen even Titanic and Queen Mary labled as HMS while clearly being under civilian merchant usage. It's accidental by those who don't know better the correct usage of the titles.

Even the box for my copy of A Night to Remember calls her the HMS Titanic. Presumably, the author of the diary didn't know the difference when they wrote that entry.

Olympic arrived in NY city on the 12th June 1912. There is no way it could have arrived on the 14th, and be ready to sail again, restocked with food, coal etc. etc. as it sailed for Southampton again on the 15th. Unless the diary is implying that it began after the arrival, on the 14th ....

Perhaps the photographs aren't from the same crossing as the diary. The photos definatly look like they're from the 30's but the diary could be original to the Olympic. I guess there's only one way to find out for sure...

He said the same to me, that the photos are fromt he Empress of Britain. I don't know that ship at all so I can't say anything further about the photos. He also sent me a few scns of the diary. I hve no time to read them at the moment, but I will put something on this board when I get the chance to read the scans.

Daniel.
