Report shows disastrous effect of Pentagon cuts in budget cuts
quote:

The House Armed Services Committee recently sent President Barack Obama a report outlining cuts the military would have to make under the “sequestration”￾ formula in this year’s Budget Control Act. Unless Congress and the president agree to an alternative long-term plan to reduce the deficit (supposedly coming from the so-called “supercommittee”￾), there will be automatic reductions in “discretionary”￾ spending.

Comment: Noted here because aircraft carriers figure prominantly in the OpEd. Also notable because I never thought I'd live to see the day when a San Francisco news source would come out in favour of military spending!

Failure To Execute The F-35 Program As Planned Will Doom America's Global Military Posture
quote:

18:04 GMT, October 24, 2011 The U.S. Department of Defense in conducting a strategic review in order to determine where funding can be cut without impairing the nation's global military posture. The review could result in reducing the number of Navy aircraft carriers, terminating several Army vehicle programs, and trimming the number of amphibious warfare vessels available to the Marine Corps. The joint force can probably absorb all of these changes without seeing its global reach greatly diminished. However, if the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter is significantly reduced, it's "game over" for America's global military posture.
