Alice Lennox-Conyngham letter to fetch £20k

Is this the only letter mailed that retains the original envelope?
I have seen other letters, but none with the original envelope...

I wish I could see the post mark- does it read 'ss Titanic'?

I wish a museum could buy this, but it will no doubt vanish forever into a private collection.

>>I wish I could see the post mark- does it read 'ss Titanic'?<<

Tarn, my opinion of the postmark is that it reads 'TRANSATLANTIC POST OFFICE 10 APRIL 1912' which occurs on most items posted from the Titanic. However, I'm unsure if there is a 'PAQUEBOT' at the bottom of the cancel , but I don't think so.

The only cancellation I have seen so far with the ships' name on it are the German Seapost cancels which bears the line as well as the name of the ship it was posted on.

Thanks Jeremy....

Im left to wonder how many leters and postcards mailed from Titanic still exist?
My guess is there is at least a dozen...

Dear all,
I am truly fascinated by this website and the time and effort all of you dedicate to that ship.

I am a journalist in Germany, writing for a philately magazine. In the next issue we will report on the auctioning of Alice Lenox-Conyngham's letter to her nephew.

I did a lot of research so far. But I cannot find any information on what happened to Alice after she left the Titanic at Cherbourg.

Tarn, I did find out that the owner of a public house in Dublin named "An Poitin Stil" bought Alices letter. He intends to display it in the pub. Therefore it has kind of gone to a museum - to see it, all you need to do is travel to Ireland!

Anyway, I would be most grateful if any of you could provide me with information on what happened to Alice Lenox-Conyngham. Where did she live, when did she die?

Moreover, I would like to know how the four Lenox-Conynghams were related to each other. Mother and three children? Was Alice Eileen's sister or aunt?

I am looking forward to receiving your replies.

Kind regards from Germany

Martina

Dear Martina,

Alice Lenox-Conyngham had been born in Edinburgh in 1873, as Harriet Alice Katherine Lenox-Conyngham. She was the sister of George Hugh Lenox-Conyngham who was the father of Eileen and Denis. As the children's aunt, Alice was travelling with the family to holiday in France, while her brother took his other children to visit family in Ireland. Alice never married and died on June 14th 1956. I understand that she had a home in Ireland too.
Hope this helps
Craig

>Dear Craig,

Thank you very much for your prompt answer. Now I can start writing the article about Alice and the letter that she wrote on board Titanic...

Just to be sure: The fourth passenger by the name of Lenox-Conyngham was the mother of Eileen and Denis?

Thanks again. This is a really awesome web forum!
