One of my friends in the neighborhood has asked me to help him identify this ship. He received an e-mail from one of his friends about a bell that was recovered from a shipwreck. It was made at the Maneely Foundry in West Troy, New York in the year 1860. Any information regarding what ships were made at this foundary would be very much appreciated.

Hi Zachary!

I am not entirely sure but I think the bell was made at a a brass foundry as most brass and or bronze ship bells were. The ship was more than likely build on a slipway at a ship yard.

In most cases, ship's bells had the name of the ship inscribed on them. However if you have a foundry number on the bell, there is a remote chance the foundry records may still exist and have a ship's name or yard number recorded against that number.

Cheers!

Jim.
