From The Asia Times:

Toxic alert as US ship heads for India
quote:

BANGALORE - A ship of United States origin that is reportedly carrying toxic substances and headed for dismantling in India's ship-breaking yards, is caught in a storm. Environmentalists are up in arms over the ship not being detoxified at its port of origin in the US and want the ship to be sent back.

Comment: A bit redundant perhaps but the story does a nice recap of the events and skullduggery which led up to this.

>>And so where is "independence" today?<<

Haven't heard a thing though I doubt she's gone anywhere. Now that the ship is back in the spotlight, it would be hard to make a move without somebody knowing and saying something about it.

Frankly, I'm surprised that they haven't done a "Norway" with her and run her up on the beach, permission or not.

No radioactive material found on ship at Alang
quote:

NEW DELHI: The Central technical team sent to inspect Platinum-II, the ship that anchored at Bhavnagar Anchorage Point along the Alang coast in Gujarat last month, has concluded that the vessel is a passenger ship and not carrying any radioactive or hazardous waste in loose form or as cargo.

Controversial ship has fake registration documents
quote:

Days after a Central team confirmed the presence of toxic chemicals on-board Platinum-II — a controversial ship that arrived at Alang ship-breaking yard last month — non-governmental organisations have claimed that the ship’s registration documents are fake.

Comment: Goodness, gracious, me! A ship hauled away illegally in the wake of some shady deals and which effectively disappears for 8 months turns up at a backwater breakers with faked documents! I'm shocked I tell you! Shocked!

‘Toxic’ ship barred

New Delhi/Ahmedabad, Nov. 9: The Union environment ministry today denied permission for US ship Platinum II to be broken, citing violations of US laws and other irregularities.

Comment: Don't be too surprised if this ship sinks under "Mysterious circumstances" somewhere at sea.

'Toxic' US ship off India coast in limbo: owner
quote:

NEW DELHI (AFP) — A leaking former US naval ship blocked from entering India's giant Alang breaking yard due to environmental concerns is in limbo after its owners said Wednesday they were unsure of where to take it.

Comment: So who is the owner? The spokesman in this story merely represents them without identifying them!

Dead' US ship in Gujarat despite Centre's marching orders
quote:

New Delhi: Condemned US Navy ship 'Platinum-II' continues to beach at Alang in Gujarat waiting to be dismantled, despite the Centre ordering it on November 9 to return to its place of origin. 'Platinum-II' was called 'SS Oceanic' and 'SS Independence' before it was declared "dead" by the US naval administration.

GMB asks Platinum II agent to remove the 'wreck' ship
quote:

Bhavnagar: The Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) has directed the ship Platinum II, which contains hazardous material and radioactive substances, be removed from Gopnath near Alang here where it is anchored.
More at http://www.zeenews.com/news591905.html

Comment: Nope, this affair hasn't gone away. Since this ship is actually grounded, I suspect the GMB's directive will have as much force as the mice voting to bell the cat.

Comment: This little trick worked well with the Norway. When you know you can get away with it, why not try it again?

They won't have to pull this trick exactly as the SSUS has already been stripped of her asbestos, but the bad PR with whomever has to tow her out of Philadelphia is definitely an issue. I don't see NCL doing it under their label. I would imagine that Chinese owned Star Cruises would "sell" her to third party company who would then do the dirty work as in what happened with the France/Norway/Blue Lady. Funny metaphorically speaking how the Chinese own the "United States." ;)

>>How long will it be before they pull the same trick with the SSUS<<

Like Joe said, with the toxic stuff already stripped out, and everything else as well, there won't be any real need to resort to skullduggery to dispose of the ship. With as little real interest as there is in maritime preservation, I strongly doubt there's going to be that much of an outcry if...more likely when...the ship is finally towed away to the breakers.

Don't believe me? Ask any number of people if they've ever even heard of the ship. Then ask them if they even much care what happens to her.

Don't be too surprised when you find that you don't like what you hear.

In today's economy, globally as well as the US, many people will not care about the "Big U" getting scrapped. In the great scheme of things, it isn't a priority on peoples minds.

I saw an email post from Peter Knego on a yahoo board saying that the Indy was five miles off Gopnath (30 miles from Alang, partially sunk and broken. She will have to be scrapped on the spot.

>>She will have to be scrapped on the spot.<<

I suspect that this was the idea from the start. The shipbreakers there don't mind beaching a ship illegally even in the face of an order from their own courts saying "Thou shalt not..."

Shucks, it worked with the Norway!
