While visiting some textile exhibits at the Met this weekend, some of the Atocha's fabulous metalware artifacts popped up in the Colonial Andes exhibition. The gold cup at the top of the page on the link above is in the Met display and it contains in the bottom a bezoar setting. Bezoars are pebbles found in the stomachs of animals as a byproduct of indigestibles and in the 17th century were thought to be an antidote to poison. Lots of other great pieces from the wreck are there, mostly plate and drinking vessels. I wonder how Mel Fisher's settlement with Florida over salvor's payment came out.
