Greg,

Could you send me the picture without the reflection of the ship on the water?I would like to try some modifications in order to use it in the website.

Best regards,
Michail

Thanks for the picture Greg! Here it is after the following modifications:

-waves left by Britannic's passage
-smoke from the funnels
-Red Cross flag on the forward mast
-Red ensign (Royal Navy) instead of the blue ensign(merchant marine)

I'm uploading a small version because I don't know how to dicrease the file size below the 35K limit.

If it is OK with you I would like to use it for the website (with credit of course).

Hope you like it.

Best regards,
Michail

Michail,
Just read your post and I think you`ve got your wires crossed somewhere.(Sorry to say)

The red ensign (duster)is the flag used for the British Merchant marine and has been in use since 1864, the white ensign is used exclusively by the the Royal Navy. The blue ensign is a much more complicated issue, it can only be flown on Merchant ships under certain circumstances:-
If the Captain is a member of the Royal Navy Reserve (RNR), having RNR Officers and rating on board add holding an Admiralty warrant, Royal Fleet Auxiliary,Customs, Coast Guard etc.

However I`ve found one other group that can fly the blue ensign The Royal Hospital Group. I`ve never heard of this before, but Britannic was a Hospital Ship, so maybe she was part of this group, or any of the above groups and was flying the Blue Ensign. Does anyone out there know ??

Hope you are not miffed at this correction I mean no offence .

Cheers and Best Regards

Dennis

Hi Dennis,

You're correct and many thanks for your observation.I made a HUGE mistake ("red" instead of "white" and "blue" instead of red").I guess I had other things in my mind when I was writing the post.Sorry for the confusion I've created. In Greg's original picture the Britannnic flew the blue ensign.

Best regards,
Michail

Michail,
Do you happen to know which ensign the Britannic was flying at the time of sinking (factually). As I said I had never heard of the "The Royal Hospital Group" so I am now curious as to the which service she was serving. Royal Navy (White Ensign) would have been a legit target for any U Boat. Red Ensign I would think would be the same. Her only saving grace would have been the Red Crosses on her Hull and her livery. Would a Blue Ensign have helped ?? Presuming of course she was sunk by a U Boat and not a mine, which I suspect is the latter most likely. (Not that I know much about it!!)

Hoping for not too much ridicule in the answer,

Cheers and Best Regards

Dennis

Nick, there's nothing wrong with your computer. A lot of the photos were lost because of a computer glitch that made a number of threads disappear. Phil Hind was able to restore the threads, but unfortunately, it wasn't possible to recover the photos.
