Britannic's Lifeboats

Hi,

I'm paying one of my visits again -- lots of interesting threads here by the looks of it, I'll have to get round to reading them. Anyway, the FAQ: What about Britannic's boats? Judging from past experience it won't be of interest to anyone, but here goes.

Seventeen lifeboats went to Salamis by November 23rd 1916, while five more boats quickly arrived at Laurium — a total of twenty-two lifeboats and the two motor boats, for twenty-four. Since thirty were lowered including the two motor boats, six lifeboats were missing. This is partly explained by the fact that while Captain Bartlett recalled the number of lifeboats lowered correctly, two of them were smashed in the ‘whirlpool’ near the port propeller at about 8.35 a.m. So only a few lifeboats out of the thirty lowered were missing. Presumably the remaining five of the thirty-five found on the sea following the sinking were either damaged, sunk or sent elsewhere.

There seems little or no record of the final Admiralty decision as to what to do with the lifeboats, save for the decision to send them to Syria. I'm quite ignorant on that -- anyone know anything further?

Best regards,

Mark.

Hello Mark,

I'm interested

I can't add anything further on this, sorry for that! It is interesting that the boats were send to Syria, why would that have been? I would find it more logical to send them back to England, dispite of their size they could be fitted to ships which needed some extra boats.

Remco

Why were the Britannic's lifeboats bunched up in the Wellin davits instead of lining the deck like the Olympic's boats after the refit?

The big Wellin davits completely disgure H&W's gracious lines of the Olympic class vessels.

Good to hear the site was of some help to you!

One point though - it is not my site. The site was created and is run by Michail Michailakis. Sadly there haven't been much updates the last months, as Michail is now serving in the Greek Army. I hope he's able to put some new things up when he has the time though! I have a few things to share ready to go online.

Regards,
Remco

Hi!

I'm late back to this thread, but I've noticed it was *me* who mistakenly wrote 'Syria' -- it should actually read 'Syra.' Simon Mills pointed out the typo, but it didn't 'click.' Sorry!

Best regards,

Mark.

Does anybody know why there are motor lifeboats? It's because they might be used to be the first responders to the rescue ship because motor lifeboats might be faster.
