SINGAPORE-BASED Keppel Offshore & Marine ventured to Brazil in Latin America seven years ago because it wanted to be near its customers. Except there were no customers to begin with for Keppel FELS Brasil, the joint venture company it set up.

'There was no contract on hand,' recalls Tong Chong Heong, managing director and chief operating officer of Keppel Offshore & Marine.

But there was plenty of hope for Keppel FELS Brasil, which combines Keppel's strength in building, repairing and converting vessels and its partner's focus on fixed-platform and module construction, offshore hook-up and commissioning work.

Comment: With shipyards in both the UK and the USA having shut their doors and others under threat, it might just behoove both to take a look at what other concerns are doing right which makes them prosper and grow. There are some lessons to be learned here.

What's even more worrysome is the quality that will come out of these "I wanna do it to" type of shipyards.

>>What's even more worrysome is the quality that will come out of these "I wanna do it to" type of shipyards.<<

Yes it is, and it has been noticed. I found a news story to the effect which I posted in the other thread dealing with the general news. It's a valid concern too. Shipbuilding skills are difficult to build up and one just doesn't aquire them overnight. The most modern and experienced shipyards still have apprenticeship programs of one sort or another for just that reason.

Building the yard is the easy part. Getting skilled workers who actually know what they're doing, keeping current on the latest technologies and retaining all of that so the result is something which won't sink the first time out, that's the real trick.
