Call Signs

Mar 12, 2011
Hi all. Long time lurker here, first time poster. Anyway, this is just out of idle curiosity, but I've looked around and not been able to find an answer anywhere that I could think to look. How were call signs for wireless transmissions assigned to vessels back in Titanic's day? Was there some sort of central regulatory body that handed them out, was it done by the Marconi company, or did the individual lines sort of pick random letters out of a hat? Any light you good people could shed on the situation would be greatly appreciated
