Hi All!

Forgive me if I have unnecessarily started a new thread. I thought there already was one on Lairds, but I cannot find it and I thought it would be good to share this with all.

A&P shipbuilders (not the grocery store chain in America!) recently paid 10 million pounds to acquire Cammell Laird ship repair yard on the Mersey at Birkenhead in northwest England. Nevertheless, the Office of Fair Trading, the competition cops in UK, will examine the deal due to monopoly fears.

A&P already owns 6 yards in UK and with the Lairds deal, it would add another 3, bolstering its dominant position in that market.

If the OFT blocks the deal, the door will be open for the two management offers to buy the yard.

Stay tuned. PS There are only a few remaining workers at the yard following the Italian ship fiasco of early 2001.
