I'm a chemist, and I just found this interesting article about a Montreal chemist who died in the disaster:

This article inquires a little bit into Titanic-related chemistry by asking a simple question: Why does ice float, anyway? If it didn't, there'd be no icebergs and no Titanic sinking, but for that matter there probably wouldn't be people around to build ships in the first place:
