The above article has just been added to ET Research. I can't promise Gill Grissom but Luke Owens has been waving his 'maglight' over the issue of "Who Died How?"

An interesting piece, Luke - I often think that the sheer number of trauma related injuries suffered by the vicitims of the disaster is overlooked, other than those crushed by the falling funnel. There are many ways to die in a shipwreck, a point you highlighted - I think it was Gracie who mentioned how bruised and battered his body was after swimming to the collapsible. With objects breaking loose as the ship sank and the more bouyant ones rocketing to the surface, those in the water would have buffeted by debris.

One thing I would query is whether we can say with any degree of confidence that the postal clerks probably drowned - I don't think there's a primary source for this, and I think it unlikely that they were overcome by rising waters while moving mailbags to dryer areas. Violet Jessop, I think, mentioned seeing one on deck during the evacuation, and Oscar Woody's body was recovered. This suggests to me that they made it out of the flooding mailroom, and their fate was the same possible range as the others - drowning, hypothermia, traumatic injury etc.

Thank you, Inger. I wanted to make this as comprehensive a piece as my knowledge base was capable of. Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to read Violet Jessop's memoirs, so I didn't know she had seen one of the mailroom clerks on deck. But there is NO excuse for my missing Oscar Woody's body having been recovered. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa (and this from a born-again Pagan! <g>).

One of the things I saw when Phil first posted this article was how much I had left out that I wanted to include. "Ain't that always the way?", as my mother is wont to say. Perhaps I'll do an updated version later; right now I'm busy with another project for ET, which is going to be VERY heavy on research.

Both Woody and March were among the bodies recovered, and I believe Boxhall accounted to seeing Gwynn on deck during sinking. It could be presumed that if these men made it out of the mail room, Smith and Williamson did so as well.

Hi, folks. Sorry I haven't been around for so long. My personal life has gone very strange, including suddenly finding myself in a wheelchair. I'm still working on a couple of articles and I hope I'll get one of them done soon. I'm also considering writing an article about how many mistakes were made in the 1997 travesty of a film, but I suspect it's been done already. We shall see.

I've missed this site, but it's been difficult for me to get on line lately. It's hard for me to sit at a computer these days. But I'll do my best!
