Just a trivial question: were the deck benches (the one with the iron ends and wooden slats) bolted to the deck or were they freely moveable?

Cheers

If I recall correctly, they were bolted to the deck. Having one of these things loose in heavy seas, especially out on the North Atlantic...could have very unpleasant, even deadly consequences.

Hey All,
Michael you do recall correctly. Many passenger accounts involve looking at the stern perpendicular to the water and seeing many passengers dangling from machinery and deck benches. Obviously they would have fallen off the ship at a 90 degree angle unless they weren't bolted to the deck. If you want to see a great photo of a recovered iron side to one of those deck benches, you should check R.M.S. Titanic Inc.'s photo gallery of artifacts.
Cheers,
Clifton
