Details of boat deck aft third funnel

Oct 31, 2007
The third funnel of the ship has numerous pipes running up and down it in a loop on the aft side. These emerge from the low housing immediately aft of the funnel. This housing is labeled "Surge tanks" in various deck plans.

Questions: What are these "surge tanks" for? Holding tanks for the gravity-fed water supply system for passenger areas? What are all those pipes running up and down the third funnel for? And in the center part of the housing is a peaked roof with what appear to be hinged doors on it. This is labeled "Reciprocating engine casing" and so is apparently the top of a shaft down into the reciprocating engine room. How did this vent? Did these lids hinge open? Seems like a strange arrangement.
