Did the Engines Fall Out on the Surface?

I have read a number of survivor accounts which said the engines had fallen out of the ship. I recall one survivor who mentioned specifically that the strong list to port caused the machinery to crash through the hull on the port side and tore the ship apart. Is this possible? The forward machinery is missing from the stern section. Was it mounted to the floor or simply held in position by its terrific weight? Could the strong list to port have caused it to slide over and crash through the hull, breaking the ship apart, or could it have been bolted down and ripped up the floor when it fell over to port?

The edge of the break shows the footprints of the forward machinery as it possibly fell through the floor, or fell over to port and tore out the port side of the stern. Was this a possible cause of the break up, or simply an event that occurred afterwards?
