Hello,

Here after some informations extracted from TTSM volume 2 page 233

<< The Forward First Class Staircase is located between Nos 1 and 2 Funnels.
The Staircase penetrated the ship for 57ft from A Deck down to F Deck.
Access to A Deck from Boat Deck was gained by descending six steps to the half-landing of the staircase and then turning aft to descend a further eleven steps to A Deck.
The stair itself was 20ft wide overall.
The A Deck landing extended 17 ft aft of the carved and paneled bulkhead from where it originated, with the bottom tread 18ft 9in wide. >>

If you want more informations regarding staircases arrangement and number of steps on other Decks, have a look on the plans HERE

Wood used for staircases, pedestrals and panels was mainly irish oak.

Other informations can be found also here on WIKIPEDIA

I see in a few photos of the elevators on the grandstaircase that there is a “Watertight Door bulkhead plate” was there a horizontal door below it?

You are right, one W.T.D starting from F Deck was located at frame 43, and doors for the 3 elevators located behind the First Class Staircase where also located at frame 43.

Was this door exposed or paneled or was not accessible to passengers at all?
Doors I've mentionned are the wrought iron sliding doors at the entrance of each 3 electric lifts.

I can't understand your last question.

Could yo be so kind as to post your referenced picture in your conversation on which that doors are shown ?

Here attached a more detailled plan of the Forward First Class Staircase on A Deck and 2 illustrations of escalator entrances ( with their sliding doors opened or closed)

I never knew that those grills were functional watertight doors I thought they were just meant to stop people from falling down the shafts

May be I've not clearly understood your first message or may be you haven't understood my answer.

Please apologize, as english is not my native language

I've never said that elevators doors were watertight, they are not at all.

I've just said that the elevators doors are located at the same frame number (43) than one of the W.T.D. starting from F Deck.

So, that elevator doors and that W.T.D. were located on the ship in a same vertical plan.

Regarding elevators doors and as usual :

At each Deck deserved by the elevator you have a wrought iron sliding doors avoiding people fo fall in the shaft when the elevator is not at that floor and one another sliding door on the mobile part of the elevator as clearly shown on the draving I've posted here above.
