Elevators

Hi everyone,
I have a Elevator question. I have noticed there is a photo of an elevator on pg 53 in Leo Marriott's Titanic book which mentions it is from the Olympic. But I can not find it anywhere on the plans.I looked where the elevators were and the the photo of the elevator does not match the layout of the plans. Is this photo from another ship from that time? Or did the crew have there own elevator to get to certain decks?

Regards Nigel Bryant

If the picture doesn't match the plans, then my bet would be that it was from another ship. I have all kinds of ships plans representative of both the Titanic and the Olympic...and even one of the Britannic. Nowhere have I ever seen elevators for the crew. Elevators were for the convenience of the passangers.

Far from being the extravagent luxury as they are often portrayed, they were very useful for elderly passangers who couldn't very well get around by climbing several deck levels of stairs.

Hello,

That photo is indeed aboard Olympic. It was taken on "D" Deck looking aft and to port. The photographer was standing just outside the Butcher's shop and the entrance to the second-class pantry. On the other side of the bulkhead is the second-class Dining Room.

If you look at the plans in Shipbuilder, you can see the elevator labeled with an "H" for "hoist." This hoist went down to "G" Deck and was the main access to the food storage rooms.

After having a wee look at the B Deck deck plans i noticed that there is an elevator just past the a la carte restaurant / cafe parisien. is this a second class elevator? Is there any footage of it anywhere? Pre or post sinking? i always just thought the elevators were behind the grand staircase.

There were a second class Elevator, near Aft Deck. I don't know it it's the same you're talking about. But 2nd Class passengers had one for use too. Only steerage passengers would only had stairways.

Hi Emilie

Yes its the aft elevator, i cant believe i never noticed this before! Or maybe i did and completely forgot about it. There was a time i fell away from Titanic and then got back into it.
