Expected moral standards from ships' officers

But let's not get confused. We are discussing the standards of the day, not how some folks actually conducted themselves. The human species hasn't changed one whit since the caveman days. Individuals might be stellar examples of virtue, but as a whole we are not a very promising animal.

The great difference in humans, is that as individuals we can improve ourselves. An animal can be trained to roll over or pull a wagon, but they cannot better themselves like a human can. However, that's not the subject of this thread.

How I hate trying to be philosophical on Monday mornings! It doesn't work. Need more coffee.

No we aren't. We are quite a nasty and selfish bunch actually, compared with animals.

It is a matter of opinion. What we consider as "improve" may not necessarily be good for the planet....or even ourselves in the long run.

Animals don't need to better themselves. Unlike humans, they have always instinctively obeyed laws of nature and always will.

Hope you enjoyed your coffee.
