From The Navy Times:

Subs would serve attack, guided-missile functions
quote:

In only eight years, the Navy will need to begin building a new class of ballistic-missile submarines. Not long after that, in the mid-2020s, a new attack submarine class is scheduled to be developed. And by the back half of the 2020s, the fleet’s four guided-missile submarines will be worn out and need replacement – and with them will go nearly two-thirds of the sub fleet’s cruise-missile tubes.

From The Diplomat:

China’s Overhyped Sub Threat
quote:

Beijing’s submarine fleet is not as big or powerful as US military planners once feared. Have its blue-water ambitions been overstated?

It was the US Navy’s biggest jolt in years. On October 26, 2006, a Chinese Song-class attack submarine quietly surfaced within nine miles of the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk as the 80,000-ton-diplacement vessel sailed on a training exercise in the East China Sea between Japan and Taiwan.
Three page story begins at http://the-diplomat.com/2011/10/20/china%e2%80%99s-overhyped-submarine-threat/

Comment: How good are they? It's a good question. Obviously, the driver of the Song class boat was good enough.

From The Express:

IS THIS THE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR BRITAIN AS A NUCLEAR POWER?
quote:

PHILIP Hammond’s appointment as defence secretary has once again thrown open the debate over the future of Britain’s independent nuclear deterrent.

Outwardly the argument is whether Mr Hammond, pushed by budgetary concerns and appeasing the Lib Dems, will reduce our submarine-based Trident system, or replace it with something different.

Comment: Uhhhh...replace it with what? Sure, you can build different systems, but in terms of survivability, nobody has really come up with anything better then a boomer!

NOTE: News reporting will be severely curtailed but not thouroughly eliminated. The reason for this is to call attention to the odd story of obvious interest without causing an undue distraction or losing focus on what this forum is all about while still being able to devote attention to those newsworthy matters which are of clear forum interest.

This one certainly qualifies as the Wowzer of the day and worthy of note.

Frankly, I'm at a loss to understand how the Canadian authorities propose to make this happen. It's not as if their navy is incompetant. Far from it. The problem is that when they're clearly reluctant to fund a few destroyers and frigates which they need to gaurd thier frontiers, one has to wonder where the money is going to be coming for this proposal.
