A New Libya May Be No Panacea for Aframaxes
quote:

Recent media reports suggest that the first crude tanker to call at a Libyan port since the fall of the Gadaffi regime was set to load at Tobruk on 25th September. Whether or not this report proves to have been true, the return of Libyan crude exports could be good news for Aframax owners, whose vessels provide the main transportation for Libyan oil. However, on close examination this may be no sure thing.

Tanker vetting - continued good marks but time for renewed effort
quote:

The evolution of the tanker shipping safety regime is currently in the midst of a quiet patch. In contrast to the 1990s and early 2000s, when oil pollution incidents like Exxon Valdez, Braer, Erika and Prestige had the various parties responsible for tanker shipping falling over themselves to get their house in order and tighten up the provisions governing tanker design, construction, operation and maintenance, today tankers are not a priority at IMO.

Medium-range product tankers plagued with high volatility
quote:

It’s been a rollercoaster year for owners of medium-range (MR) product tankers this year. As London-based shipbroker Gibson noted in a recent report, back in spring of 2011, the transatlantic MR market returned to the glorious days of 2008, with tce earnings for UK Continent — US Atlantic Coast (TC2) rising close to $23,000/day in late April/early May.

Reflections on Things That Don't Turn Out As Expected
quote:

Ten years ago was a scary time for shipping. VLCC earnings had slumped from $80,000/day the previous November to $18,000/day. Meanwhile the Dot.Com crisis was gathering momentum and the Dow Jones Industrial Index had lost a third of its value, leaving enthusiastic internet stock traders with massive losses. Then came the icing on the cake, the twin towers disaster in September 2001, followed by the invasion of Afghanistan.

Tanker fixtures higher, but not enough to boost earnings on oversupply issues
quote:

The latest monthly report from OPEC, covering the month of September offers a pretty solid picture on one of the major issues plaguing the tanker industry, that of tonnage oversupply as currently it seems that too many ships are competing for cargoes.

You Thought You'd Seen the Last of Them Didn't You?
quote:

Famous singers find it difficult to retire. Tony Bennett, the man with the crushed velvet voice, was still able to sing a duet with Amy Winehouse at the age of 84. Admittedly by that time he sounded more like crushed gravel (and Amy Winehouse was pretty amazing too), so you have to admire him. But what about that select band of single hull tankers which, nine months after their drop dead date in December 2010, are still out there giving farewell concerts?
