George D Widener Hospital for Large Animals

Carole Lindsay

An interesting fact - the Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was treated at the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals at the University of Pennsylvania.

It made me wonder if it was founded by George Widener himself or his brother Joseph, who was a well known horse breeder. Can anyone tell us about this

It seems like there must be some kind of connection. Perhaps he gave a large donation and they named it after him. It was the hospital's New Bolton Center, by the way, that treated Barbaro. (Just checked the Widener hospital Web site and did not see anything specific on there giving the history of the hospital's name.) Anybody else have any details on this?
