Guns on Titanic

If anybody cares, the Colt Model 1911 auto pistols carried by David Warner in the Cameron "Titanic" would have been virtually impossible to have been on the voyage, as production of the had just been undertaken in 1912, and would really not have been available in time--especially given the fact that Warner has them in England, and would have had to tote them there prior to the Titanic departure. I was contacted by Stembridge Gun Rentals who supplied the hardware for the film and recommended that they use Colt Model 1902s 1903s or 1905s which not only would have been correct, but would have had a really cool period look. Apparently wiser heads prevailed, and 1911s were used anyway. On the other hand, they did follow my advice and supply four-inch barreled Webley Mark Is, IIs and IIIs for the Titanic officers, and those would have been 100 percent proper.

Also, Cal's gun is a model 1911 Colt A1, a modified version of the 1911 that didn't appear until 1926. The main distinguishing feature is its curved mainspring housing (bottom part of the grip), which on the 1911 Model is straight.

The Titanic special edition with the James Cameron commentary he says we have to keep in mind this was right after the wild west so he could have obtained one. Thats the only explaination he gave.

"I believe you may get your headline, Mr. Isamy"

I think you'll find that Mr. Cameron was speaking in some broadly general terms and as strange as it may sound in a day and age of metal detectors and Gun Free Zones, he'd be right. Several people were packing heat on the Titanic...Michel Navratil had a loaded revolver on his person when his body was recovered...and this is not something that anyone would have given a lot of thought to at the time.

Getting into specifics, the problem here is that Spicer Lovejoy is portrayed as carrying a version of the Colt 1911 that wouldn't even be produced for another 14 years.
