The Interior of the sailors home Oxford street , southampton was fabulously decorated with Carter & Co tiles. The tiles were made specifically for this building. They were covering the walls of the entire ground floor. They were an impressionistic reflection of the sea . They were seven feet tall on the walls . At the base of the walls the tiles were Purples/blacks (the ocean floor) graduating up the wall the tiles were deep greens/blue (the mid ocean ) going further up they became lighter green/light blues (the ocean surface). In between there were patterned tubelined tiles of Neptune, A mythical sea creature/Dolphin, a Clam and an Anchor. Built in 1909 this would have been a cutting edge building.
