I was reading Dr. Robert Ballard's "Discovery of the Titanic" (paperback, sadly) and he talks about meeting Bill Tantum. He would cheer Mr. Ballard up if he was discouraged or depressed. He was a very nice guy. He was called "Mr. Titanic" because he was so rivited by the subject. He was in a collision himself, in 1937, when he was seven. That prompted passengers to talk about The Empress of Ireland, The lusitania, and the Titanic. That, I suspect, was what began his lifelong fascination. Sadly, Mr. Tantum was in poor health, and passed away in 1980/81. Did any of y'all know him or meet him before his passing?
