I need Help with TITANIC Dummies

"I embarrassed myself more than once on this board. There is always someone to correct me or should I say ..gently guide me to see things from a different perspective."

See??

That's what I get for believing everything I see on Discovery Channel and not checking the facts that were here for me!
At least it wasn't the Equal Opportunity Curmudgeon this time! LOL On the plus side, that's a video tape I can erase and use again! rotf

Thanks Jason! I'm glad you corrected it!

You're welcome, Stephanie. No worries.

Christian, as Stephenie said, don't let them get to you. Your strong interest in a particular liner in a particular point in time and the way it's mismanagement put her on the ocean bottom in pieces is no more odd then some of the interests your chums have in cars, hunting, beer, sports, etc.

>>I embarrassed myself more than once on this board.<<

So have I. Nobody...and I do mean nobody knows it all nor can they. The nice part about this board is that there are subject experts hanging around who know what the real deal is and have a willingness to share it.

Christian,

I wouldn't let them get to you either. People such as that are not worth your time. As Mike said, it's no different from any other interest or hobby.

Hi Ryan-

When I first saw your topic listing, I thought you were referring to the foam rubber and C.G. types used by James Cameron.

Here's another variation on the same theme,:

People in line waiting to buy tickets to "Titanic-1997":
"What I'm looking forward to are the special effects when they show the ship sinking."

People in line behind them (whispering).:
"I just hate it when people like that spoil the movie for you by giving away how it ends before you've even seen the movie."

Lee Gilliland-

Sorry 'bout that. I didn't read all the comments and missed yours.I apologize for the duplication.
I think that would fall under the category of "twice told tales." :-)

This topic reminds me of a story I heard that sounds credible, if unbelievable: The author of a book I'm reading had gone to China about 10 or 15 years ago and and a few shipyard workers showed him a western newspaper article about the space program and said, "We've been hearing rumors for years that they have landed men on the moon! Is this true?" So, as stated above, it all boils down to education. If you don't have access to the information, how are you going to know? Many Aleuts in the Aleutian Islands in the 1940's had no idea that there was a war going on until US troops forced them into camps in mainland Alaska because the Japanese had invaded nearby islands. And you don't nessesarily have to live in East Nowhere to be that information-deprived. At least these people had at least HEARD of the Titanic. They probably just heard that the movie was made up all the time (which it was) and assumed that everything in it was a work of fiction. For people who don't read, just play video games and watch cartoons, it's easy to see how they could be misinformed. My usual response to such ignorance: "Oi".

Which also reminds me of another story.
There also people who still believe that the landings on the moon were some sort of Hollywood production staged on some location no farther from Planet Earth than the deserts of California.
Probably same goes for "Titanic"...maybe the same for something produced in Hollywood (1953),
Pinewood (1958) and Rosa Rito (1997).

There was a movie made about the faking of the moon landings- I think it may have had Rock Hudson in it. It was sure an eye opener- and gave me an uneasy feeling about how quick we are to believe all we see on TV.

That was "Capricorn One", where a Mars landing was filmed at a studio in the Mojave desert, but then the capsule burned up on re-entry, so the astronauts had to be killed. The principals were Sam Waterson, O.J. Simpson, and James Brolin as the astronauts, Hal Holbrook as the NASA Mission Controller, and Elliot Gould as the investigative reporter. My source is from the Barnes & Noble website, where "Capricorn One", is available on DVD.

No I can't see how a "conspiracy theory" type plot could be done for TITANIC; just as there were too many involved H&W workers to prevent the "Switch the Ships and Sink OLYMPIC" idea, there were too many passengers and crew involved.

Unless, that is, a "Titanic Code" mystery involves descendants of the ill-fated passengers and crew popping up through out the world:the story is that all but the listed survivors got off the ship (somewhere in the mid-Atlantic), and those people were transported off to various "parts unknown". Then we learn that some shared secret, passed down through generations has now leaked out, and threatens "the world order", prompting Christian Bale and Katie Holmes (reunited from "Batman Returns") to be sent out to locate and destroy all evidences of the secret documents (with Tom Cruise playing the chief villain; perfect if he and Katie split, in real life).

So, do I call James Cameron tomorrow?? I'll insist that many of us will play the descendants of the passengers and crew.

>>So, do I call James Cameron tomorrow??<<

Try Oliver Stone. If you want to commit conspiracy theories to film no matter how whacked out they happen to be, he's your man for the job!

Sounds good, Michael.

BTW, you'll definitely be cast should there be a part of a U.S. Navy official. Parks will have the role of an underwater researcher (we'd of course have to feature a dive to the ship), while Jason and Inger could start the list of survivor's descendants; yes, we can write in that some of the 705 survivors knew fully what happened over the years and relayed that information. JDT could become the "3rd Grandnephew to 'Colonel Arthur'" while Inger is the character with memories of "Dear Great Uncle Harold", during her stays in Wales.

Yes, Phil, I realize this has become rather bizzare, and off-topic from the original subject.

"We now return to the "TITANIC Dummies".

Ha Ha! Isn't it amazing how we went from talking about lack of education to Oliver Stone filming a movie about how the Titanic was made up?(Although, I believe I did see a topic here where the discussion went from talking about the Titanic's swimming pools to mixed nudism, so it could have been worse ;)
