In defense of James Cameron's Titanic movie

I think that the difference isn't that much between Miss Sloan and Ms. Piper.

Natalie Portman was born in Israel and yet sounds like an American. She can do it. I'd like to see her try but as Jason Tiller will tell you I have it bad for Natalie Portman.

Jason T. I have a Child myself so I'll behave now.

For how long? She is young--under 30.

The young lady is considerably smart AND, from what I've read, very nice. A great combination! Last I read, she was single, too, George, so maybe you can go for it. Of course, I think she said that she is too busy with school and her career, but, hey, you can give it a shot. ;)

Actually, George, if you'd rather take this off the board, feel free to drop me an email and we can continue the discussion there.

I just have to mind my Ps and Qs. Besides the Whipped cream instance I didn't think it got so bad really.

Since 1999 when I went to see George Lucas's Star Wars-The Phantom Menace. Maybe it was her Geisha inspired wardrobe. Come to think of it I had a crush on Carrie Fisher from Return Of The Jedi when she wears that lovely costume and enslaved by Jabba The Hut. Memories.

Back To Topic. What about casting Carrie Fisher as Molly Brown. Her Mom Debbie Reynolds played the part. I think Carrie would put in a good performance as Molly Brown.

How about "V for Vendetta"? In addition to Miss Portman being quite attractive, I think she is a very good actress. That can be rare combination (beauty and talent in the same person).

I think Portman could play the Countess of Roths.

Carrie Fisher as Margaret Brown? While I liked her mother in the fictitious musical, if a film were to be made more accurately, then we need to find someone who isn't all that physically beautiful (or slender) to play Margaret.

I thought Kathy Bates was a great choice physically for Margaret's personification in the Cameron flick. To bad we didn't get to see more of her.

Now though? Well, Meryl Streep is quite versatile and might be able to become Margaret.

Carrie might be a great Good Golly Miss Molly. She seems like the type of person who'd really get into Brown's eccentric socialite character.

I never saw V for Vandetta, but the cover of the DVD case looks interesting. I don't remember what it was about, only that it was set sometime in the future.

As for you minding your Ps and Qs, George, I was the one who made the whipped cream quip, not to mention the 'hairy beast' comment, lol.

In real life, Margaret Brown was not the happy-go-lucky spitfire we see in film and hear in legend. A strong woman yes, but not a wildcat.

If this film is to focus more on real people as they were, and real events, then the actors chosen should also reflect this.

I like the idea of Sean Connery as Strauss.

This used to be a topic that could produce a boatload of comments from me, because I hated the movie the first time I saw it theatrically, and I hated it even more the second and last time I saw it, around 2002 on DVD. I have a lot of posts here and in other places outlining why I hated it so much, and while I still feel the same way, I've moved on from the topic in large measure because the hoopla associated with the movie is gone. I can now teach history to students who after ten years don't even remember the movie, and when I show them an excerpt from a Titanic movie, I stick to a good one, ANTR and just leave it at that.

Jason and Mark

Carrie Fisher could do Molly just fine and win an award doing it. She would look fine as Molly.

No worries Mark. I sure you learned you lesson.

Though I was no Lily myself.

Natalie could play Attila The Hun and make my heart skip a beat.

Kathy Bates would've won had the part been a bit bigger, and what interplay we do see with the principals is strong; comes from her PCPA stage experience. It was lively, but not overplayed-forget Debbie Reynolds as Molly Brown (very small part in the overall film UMB). Oh, and Gloria Stewart was stone robbed! As to Miss Portman, oh yeah baby!

For those of you who, like myself, are infatuated with Natalie Portman you should see her in "Where The Heart Is" if you haven't already.(yes it is a bit of a chick flick) This is the movie that made me fall in love with her.

Matthew-
Will try to see it.

Will-
Carrie Fisher should do just as well but I think she will play the part way differently then her mother did. That is if she'll play it at all.

Natalie Portman would rock as the Countess Of Roths. Yes for those just joining us you should know I have it bad for Natalie Portman. Seems I'm not the only one though.

If you can pull yourselves away from swooning over Ms. Portman long enough, maybe we provide attention to other parts, too, hehe.

How about the other male characters, such as Wilde, Moody, Pitman, Boxhall, Hitchens, Fleet, Lee, George Rowe, Mr. Ryerson and son, John B. and Jack Thayer, Hugh Woolner, Archibald Gracie, Robert Daniel, George Rheims, Major Arthur Peuchen, Lawrence Beesley, Archie Butt, George and Harry Widener, Bride, Phillips, Daniel Buckley, Milton Long, Olaus Abelseth, just to name a few. We need strong leading mean for each of these as well. ;)

Natalie Portman Walks in Beauty
By George Lorton

Natalie Portman walks in beauty on the screen
her talent is to be seen.
In the House of Fame she abides evermore.
Her beauty is bliss rarely seen
as she walks in beauty on the screen.
