Is this Olympic

Hi,

Yes it is the Olympic taken before her trails in Belfast I think. The Olympic had white side rails on the top of her lifeboats while Titanic's were painted brown. This colour scheme was added to Olympic soon after.

The deck scrubbings before and after voyages would not be this extensive.

The photo was taken after the ship was completed and shortly before the ship was delivered to White Star, I would imagine the crew in the photo is scrubbing the deck of all the muck gathered from construction and outfitting, like muddy footprints, grease, paint and the like.

Best Regards,

Brian

If anyone is thinking about buying photos from this seller, please use caution. I've seen the printouts he sells (they are not actual photographic prints but rather computer printouts) and the quality is extremely poor. They are of no use whatsoever for research.

Also notice that his feedback is private. That in itself makes me suspicious.

Hi All!

Heed Eric'a warnings, I bought the above mentioned "print" from this seller back in August and it was printed on poor quality photo paper and it was cropped horribly - the edges were crooked and there were no white borders and scissor marks were evident in areas - needless to say I was very annoyed.

Best Regards,

Brian

Look at his rules in the item listing - sounds almost threatening....

>>Was the washing of decks really so intensive? Look at how many people scrubbing in a small place in the photo!<<

Yes. In the wake of a long shipyard availablity like a refit or an fitting out of new construction, cleaning the ship to the point where she's at least presentable can be quite a chore. I've been through two major refits and a number of yard availablities as well as new construction so I know about that from firsthand experience. The photo shows shipfitters and crew using a firehose along with the scrub brushes. That's pretty reasonable from my point of view.
