He was the fourth officer on the titanic and he was ordered to calculate the location of the titanic and to fire distress flares. He and the captain Edward Smith got the wrong location, the captain was about 20 miles off and Joseph box hall was really far off. The captain told him to take charge of one of the lifeboats so he did this and they were brought to safety by the RSM Carpathia
