John Batchelor

Is anyone familiar with the art of John Batchelor? It is my understanding that he has made a number of Titanic-related paintings. I would be interested to hear more about the artist and his work.

I put together some rough notes on his work a while back for my collection's catalogue, but it's pretty much what's contained in the Dover publication of six of his paintings (in postcard format). I'm sure they are the works you're referring to. (Six Titanic Paintings Cards, Dover Publications, 1998, ISBN 0486400018)

He's quite prolific and paints across several transport genres. The Titanic 'booklet' and 100 Historic Ships in Full Color (another Dover book) describe him as a 'noted maritime artist'. The blurb to 100 Historic Airplanes in Full Color describes him as a 'renowned aviation artist'. Other Dover publications include his work on lighthouses and armour, just to give two more examples. (See www.doverpublications.com for more information.)

A quick biblio search turned him up as illustrator of numerous transport works covering historic and contemporary subjects. No real answer to your question, perhaps, but hopefully something to assist you in getting there. Given the range of his work and its mention in both the US and UK, hopefully someone who's seen his paintings (rather than just reproductions) will be able to add more.
