Krownprinz eugen common pratice to turn liners into warships

I just saw a picture of the krownprinz eugen
a german ocean liner which was turned into
a auxlilary crusier in ww 1 was this common pratice by either side

Hello, Kevin---

It was indeed a common practice. Just as an example, five White Star liners---Teutonic, Oceanic, Celtic, Cedric and Laurentic I---served as AMC's during WW I, and another---Laurentic II---during WW II. The British government paid the line an annual stipend for the right to call these ships into service in wartime.
