Launch of the Britannic

Late Evening:

As good luck would have it, I acquired a copy of Jane's Fighting Ships (1914). Near the end pages, much to my delight, is an ad of BULLIVANTS' STEEL WIRE ROPES Durable & Reliable, which features a nice image of the Britannic just after her launch. The caption states...Launch of the "Britannic" with Bullivant's Ropes.

In time, an associate of mine promised to scan it for me so that I may share it with you Britannic aficionados.

And you should see the *haunting* military identification silhouettes of OLYMPIC, LUSITANIA and MAURETANIA therin Jane's 1914. I wonder of Lt. Kapitan Schweiger carried one on-board his U command?

Hi Michael!

Interesting fact! While there were such passenger liner silhouette books available to sub commanders, it is speculated that most would have only carried silhouette books of military ships. It was probably common knowledge to most people of the era that only the most prestigious ships bore four funnels and that was probably how LzS. Schweiger identified the Lusitania.

Best Regards,

Brian
