Light Ships A Photo Gallery

Someone was asking here a while back about the location(?) of the Nantucket light ship. At the time I couldn't offer anything, but I recently chanced upon this excellent web site -- from the U.S. Coast Guard historian -- which displays several fine photos and descriptions of these vessels, including various shots of those marking the Ambrose Channel and Nantucket Shoals.

The coordinates of at least the 1930's location of the Nantucket LV's are also indicated in one of the captions, though that may not be identical to 1912's position -- the anchorage was apparently shifted a few times since the light's inception.

In addition to some pretty decent views of the light vessels themselves, there are also a couple photos which show the *Olympic* passing by -- one quite ominous, since it was taken from aboard Nantucket L.S. 117, which was tragically rammed and sunk by "Old Reliable" in 1934, with an ultimate loss of 7 lives. (Three crew members succumbed later to injuries received.)
