If you haven't seen it, I recommend highly the 1918 "The Sinking of the Lusitania" by cartoonist "Winsor McCay (of "Little Nemo" and "Gertie the Dinosaur" fame). Of course it's a WWI propaganda piece, but its done in a meticulous, naturalistic manner that is absolutely awesome--far superior to most other animation that was being done at the time. It's available on DVD from Cinemtheque Quebecoise and is titled "Animation Legend Winsor McCay."
