Hopefully someone can clear the following up for me.
I have always been under the impression that the Lusitania`s final destination was to be Liverpool. However, some have claimed that the ship received a wireless message for the ship to divert into Queenstown. Apparently this had happened to Turner before in February 1915 when he received such a diversion message whilst in command of another ship.
Evidence for this diversion of the Lusitania comes from the fact that a large number of baggage handlers were killed, apparently whilst removing baggage from the forward holds when the ship was torpedoed.
Some say they would not have been removing baggage if they were heading for Liverpool because the ship was still some 200 miles away. So they must have been heading for Queenstown.
Apparently a number of wireless messages are now missing from the archives about 5 I think. It is said that one of these missing messages is the Queenstown wireless.
Surely if Turner had received such a order to divert why didn`t he make this clear at the Mersey Inquiry. Didn`t he say something like he intended to catch the tide in Liverpool or words to that effect.
Others have dismissed the diversion story on the basis that the ship`s last turn was away from port i.e away from Queenstown.
So has anyone any ideas over the true picture? Was Turner told to divert into Queenstown or not?
