Mailbags in Titanic

In the 1997 movie, Titanic, there was something that confused me. When the ship left Southampton, I noticed a smaller ship that was attached to the side of Titanic. Was that really there? If so, what was it's purpose? Was it to carry mail from the passengers back to Southampton or something?

As mentioned in another thread where you posted this same question, the "smaller ship" was a tugboat. One of several needed to manuever the ship away from the quaywall and get her safely out into the channel. There would be no need to offload mail at the last possible minute as the ship was standing out to sea from Southampton. This was easy enough to accomplish in Cherbourg and Queenstown.

For future reference, there is no need to post the same question in different threads.
