The proposals to preserve the Maxim Gorky in Hamburg and Kungsholm (1966) in Gothenburg or Stockholm as hotel and museum ships were unsuccessful because of the politicians getting involved and making a political affair rather than a question of money that doomed other preservation proposals. The financing for both ships to be used as dockside hotels and attractions were taking care of by the investors behind both projects, but incompetent politicians got in the way for both ships. Both ships should have been preserved in their respective homeowners rather than scrapped as they were beautiful and historically significant ships that would have become popular tourist attractions along the lines of the Queen Mary in Long Beach and the SS Rotterdam in Rotterdam.
