My grandfather missed the boat, his cousin didn't

My grandfather, Martin Kulas' (born in Perusic Croatia, 1891) traveled to Austria to work for passage to America. I believe he and his cousin installed power lines in rural Austria. In April of 1912, they both had enough money to make passage, however, my grandfather had promised his father that he would help him with the planting of crops before he left for America. As a result, he missed the departure of the Titanic and instead left on a ship on April 23, 1912.
His cousin's last name was not Kulas' as there is no one named Kulas' listed as a victim of the Titanic sinking. There were 30 Croatians on board the Titanic and only 3 survived. His cousin was not one of those.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I might confirm the story and find my great-cousin's name?

Thank you...yes.
I set up a spreadsheet and am going through a process of elimination.
He was apparently a cousin on the maternal side, since there is no victims with my grandfather's surname.
I have been trying to unlock my grandfather's relatives of his generation by exploring his mothers siblings on Ancestry, but so far that has been difficult, since record keeping in Croatia was patchy at best in the 19th century.

Looked around a little but didn't find anything. But did run across a statement by a nephew of one of the survivors:
‘The White Star Line Company, which owned the Titanic, decorated survivors and presented them an ironic award – free life passes to travel with the company. The ones who were reimbursed were mostly the rich and second class, excluding the third class – including Croats’.”
Never heard of this before. Does anybody know if this was the case or just another story that was created? Curious to know. From the article below.
