WASHINGTON (NNS) -- USS Gravely (DDG 107) successfully completed Final Contract Trials in Norfolk, Va., May 19.

The trial, run by the Navy's Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV), is part of a series of post-delivery test and trials during which the ship and its major systems are exercised, tested and corrected as required.

House appropriators have recommended lopping $1.7 billion off the Navy’s 2012 procurement request of $45 billion, according to budget documents obtained by Navy Times.

The mark-up, prepared by the House Appropriations Committee Subcommittee on Defense, would fund the Navy with $43.5 billion for procurement in fiscal 2012, a 3.7 percent drop from the Navy Department’s request.

Fire Damage to Destroyer 'Minimal,' U.S. Navy Says

The new destroyer Spruance escaped major damage from a flash engine fire that took place May 20, the U.S. Navy said, and the ship remains on schedule to join the fleet later this year.

"There were no personnel injuries and the damage to the ship was minor," the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) said in a June 24 statement to Defense News.

Testing evolutions completed during the ship's initial, or Alpha, sea trials included diving to test depth, conducting an emergency surfacing and testing the submarine's propulsion plant.
