New Olympic picture

I bought another picture of the Olympic today ! The seller says in person it is a lot sharper.
The reply to me about the photo (below) made me wonder about copy rights ? Are there really people out there using images that they should not, or is the seller perhaps going a bit over board I wonder with being careful .... I will post a better scan when I get the *clearer* photo !

scan enclosed of front - it is taken through a plastic protector so the photo is sharper than this scan shows. It is actually quite clear and you can easily read her name with ordinary eyesight. I don't want to send a better scan in case the image is used without permission somewhere.

By unique I mean it is likely that this is the only copy of the photo in existence - it is a snapshot from an album rather than a commercially produced item - i.e. someone went to the Ocean (nee White Star) Dock in Southampton with their camera, took the picture and popped it in an album. It dates from post 1922 as it came with a picture of the Majestic (introduced in 1922 to WSL Service). Unfortunately I cannot tell if it is after the 1928 refit as I cannot see the lifeboat configuration (after 28 she had the nested lifeboats) but it is certainly post 1922. The back has the word SELO four times (a proprietary make of photo paper like Kodak but certainly 1920s.)

I have bought and sold 100s of different views of Olympic and have never seen this one and doubt I will again after I sell it! The reference to the WSL is just to her owners to make sure I get as many people look as possible

>>Olympic in the Solent?<<

What picture was this ? :-)

Thanks Steve will send a clear scan of the image when it comes :-)

I think it might be surprisingly nicer than the little scan above. I hope so anyway - but you never know until you see the real image.

Hello Iain and Neal :-)))

The picture of the Olympic in the Solent is lovely. Wish I had seen it ! It's just the sort of thing I look for - a one off picture. Although the Olympic is in the distance it's still v. nice. Only £17.00 !!! I can never get enough pictures of the Olympic....

Your pictures are very nice Neal, again wish they were mine !!

What's the best way to do a search for Olympic pictures on Ebay. Is there somethng I don't know about, as I just type in White Star Line Olympic, SS Olympic, RMS or R.M.S Olympic, Cunard White Star Olympic and also look in the Titanic postcards and paper section ! However I missed this Solent Olympic pic ?

I can't remember how I found the Solent picture but as I'm not very clever on the computer and have even less tolerance when things go wrong, I can only assume I typed in "Olympic", had three million Olympic Games items come up and whittled it down to the ship by and ticking the "transportation" box on the left hand-column.

Cheers,

Boz

Looks good to me, even if a bit fuzzy. I wonder if this photo may have been taken just befor the ship made her final trip to the breakers. There's a small crowd on the quay, but not so many apparant on deck and the ship looks like she's riding higher in the water then she would if she was loaded for a passenger run.

I'd say it is very likely that this is an image of Olympic leaving for the breakers. She is at Berth 108, obviously. (not a regular for her)
Have you tried boosting the resolution on your scanner? Many scanners have a default resolution that is lower then what they are capable of. (or perhaps you compressed it for uploading)
I would love to see a larger version in the 800 x 600 range. There are very few pics I have seen of Olympic leaving for the scrappers, and this is one of the better ones.

Hello
Thanks for your replies and information. I can see what you both mean about it looking like it was taken during the period just before she left for the breakers. There are 2 well known photo's in the book 'The Only Way To Cross' of the Olympic at this time - one with the Mauretania. I'm sure you know the pictures and they have been in other books also, and it does look similar. Also another thing that makes me think this picture was taken in the 1930's is because her funnels always seemed to come out a lot whiter in the B&W 30's photography.

As for the image it is quite sharp - just a bit small. This does not come across on ET once it has been made to fit, but you can read Olympic on the bow.

I have tried to play around with my scanner to see if I can get more detail and have scanned it on the highest resolution but have had no luck with posting it again - it still has to be reduced down to fit.

I don't know if the fact that there are not many pictures of the Olympic going to the breakers makes this more valuable ? Not that I mind, but still it's interesting. The image cost me £66, which is a fair price I think.

I will be happy to try and send a more detailed scan if anyone is interested to your email. Might take a bit of time as I will have to get Out Look Express set up as my MSN account will not allow me to attach such a large image :-))

Thanks !
